In Melbourne, there are many taxi drivers who find it difficult to earn sufficient income to support their families, including disadvantaged migrant and refugee drivers. At the same time, there is an acute shortage of drivers for larger buses, such as those that operate in the public transport network of the city.
After a successful pilot to train precariously and under-employed maxi-taxi drivers for driving larger buses, Local Transit is currently seeking funding for a larger trial that will partner with employment providers, Bus Vic and bus companies.
As we design and develop this training program, we are seeking Expressions of Interest from drivers who are interested in participating in this training. The training involves theory, employment and workplace skills development and on-the-road bus driver training, and results in the driver obtaining a heavy rigid license, and potential employment as a bus driver.
